Back in the 80s Stephen (Steve) Perry was a writer for the Thundercats and Silverhawks TV series and occasional contributor to comics, co-creating Timespirits for Epic Comics, writing Psi Force for Marvel's New Universe, Thunder Agents and Bizarre Adventures.
Last year, his friend and co-creator Steve Bissette made his situation public. Stephen was broke, without medical insurance, sole carer for his five year old son, too sick to work because of recently diagnosed cancer, homeless and reduced to living out of his car with his son. Thanks to the appeals and the generosity of The Hero Initiative his situation began to improve.
Earlier this month, Stephen once had a really tough time, as again reported by Steve Bissette. I did due diligence. I gave a little. Not a lot. I'm embarrassed by how small my donation was, but, every little helps.
Yesterday I got heartbreaking email from Stephen. I'm not revealing any secrets, hopefully, as he tells the full story in detail here. Thanks to the donations he received he was able to pay for medical treatment and tests. And they've revealed his cancer to be back, with a vengeance. The good news is that the tests caught tumors early enough for them to be treatable. He's due to be taken in for surgery as early as next week.
I don't feel comfortable asking anyone to donate to either Stephen or The Hero Initiative. I just thought I'd bring this to the attention of my readers. And if people have a few spare bucks lying around, there are a lot worse things they can do with it.
