New Mootants...
Nov. 19th, 2003 09:51 am...was actually surprisingly good this week. I blow hot and cold on the comic but this weeks was -much- better than any previous issue in my opinion and actually goes as far as being the best read of the week. Why's it good? Well, the new artist is a great improvement (although on the whole I didn't hate the old artist). He has a good 'fun' style that works for that particular book, somewhere between being realistic and hyper-deformed, but not quite as annoying as Chris Bachelo's manga influenced art.
The script was also a lot better this week and actually read like a comic far longer than its standard page count. A lot of the fun for me was the 'where's waldo' style picking out of background characters. Nice to see a new set of weird looking students, they've dried up since Quitely stopped drawing New X-men. I'm sure I spotted Nightcrawler and Chamber in the backgrounds.
The 'letter home' approach to the issue wasn't spectacularly original (probably been done in comics before, but certainly in plenty of episodes of M*A*S*H if nowhere else), but it worked for this issue to tie together all the many plot threads. No battles with bad guys, just talking heads type stuff that was well handled. Okay, the mansion got blown up at one point, but all to serve the plot. Josh is turning out to be an interesting character, and the issue was probably far better for losing most of the annoying unoriginal plot elements that haunted previous issues. Probably because they got rid of Kevin, who as a Jono/Rogue clone was nothing new. David is still a very generic type but the characters played off each other well this issue.
Actually looking forward to the next issue, for the first time...
One thing though... anyone else wondering if Dani being hit on by the girl in the coffee shop is just a prelude to turning another character gay? I hope not but it kinda foreshadows something. Maybe it's just a device to have the coffee shop girl and Xi'an hook up, since Shan has apparently gone all gay too.
Funny how no-one was up in arms at the idea of a bit of lesbian love action between two women, but any mention of the furry Beast wanting to play tonsil hockey with guys and it was like the world had ended...
