Okay, so apparently I'm not the ONLY person who waits for the hype to die down on something before watching, so as to be pleasantly surprised rather than disappointed that stuff isn't BETTER THAN GOD like some people state.

This is the reason I've not seen Iron Man or Dark Knight yet.

Honestly, I never liked Batman Begins much. And the cult of TDK is everywhere. There's a religious fanaticism about it where critics who proclaim it simply to be a great movie instead of TEH BESTEST MOVIE EVERER are getting abusive email bombs.

With that much hype no movie's ever gonna live up to it. It's probably a great movie. But I'm gonna wait.

Don't bother with the "zomg it totally lives up to the hype!!" responses, because no movie ever could unless it were directed by God and staring the Holy Trinity.

But anyway, it's one of a few movies I have on my "will see eventually" list. Little Miss Sunshine was one. And when I finally got to see it, I'd forgotten the hype and it exceeded my expectations.

That makes sense to me. It's good to hear other people say similar things. I've been hauled over the coals like a a pariah for not wanting to see TDK yet. It's all very odd.

I've been absent a lot this week as I've been working hard on this year's Spammies Awards for DonMurphy.net. Lots of us have been tinkering with animations, video, spoof footage and more for many months and with me going away at the beginning of September I'm fighting to get this sucker closed down before then. That's a lot of work video editing, creating, a whole bunch of animating. It's been a learning curve for me and I'm hoping the end result will be something that's quite funny even if you don't know the in-jokes of the Don Murphy boards. So far it's looking to weigh in at 30 minutes plus, which gives some idea of the work involved.

It's a lot of work for something which is basically just a stupid spoof forum awards but it'd be good to create something that a large group of people can enjoy.

Onwards and upwards.

And my website's working again. Woot!

Some of it anyway.

I'm not going to go on about both movies - I enjoyed both, but neither here nor there.

I was more going to say I'm sort of the same way with some things, at least with books. I've had the last Harry Potter book since the blasted thing came out. Absolutely refuse to read it. It's about the time that people go "YOU HAVE TO WATCH/READ THIS!!!" that I go 'screw you. Still haven't seen the DiCaprio Romeo and Juliet. Won't watch it, either. Too many people have said I -have- to. Screw 'em!!!

Alright. 'nough rambling on your journal :)

Quite. It's my reaction when people say I HAVE to do something to say "bugger off." So it's a combination of that and the hype thing that keeps me from watching stuff. Now people have been berating me saying I'm only screwing myself by not following the crowds but, eh, so? I don't get why it matters so much to people that I see such and such movie or read such and such book.

I've never read any Harry Potter anyway. Saw the first movie more by accident than design and couldn't see what the fuss was about.

Perhaps it's stubborn, but I don't quite get why people get so passionate about this stuff. I love movies, but I'm not passionate about them to the point of ramming down people's throats that they have to see such and such. i make recommendations, I do my reviews here, but there's something almost cultish about some pop culture stuff. One of us, one of us. TDK seems to be the worst for this (although Iron Man was close). I was so sick of hearing about them before they came out even, when they did the obsessive fans who, because THEY loved something insisted YOU do too... Hmm, that's just kinda creepy.

Chances are I will like TDK, but there's a difference between me deciding that for myself and having it demanded of me.

I also haven't seen TDK. Hell, it was only about a year ago or so I saw Batman Begins (which, although I think it was the best Batman movie, that's not really saying a whole lot, it was enjoyable but had weaknesses). But then I very rarely see any movies in the theatres or even on DVD. Mostly I wait for them to air on TV and I can watch them without leaving my place. :)

I watch most stuff on DVD. Simply because I have a short attention span anyway and rarely sit to watch a movie in one sitting, but going to the movies is so expensive. I'll go if it's something I really want to see which I think will benefit from the big screen experience, special effecty stuff, but with the cost of going to the cinema so high, I'd much rather wait, buy the DVD for probably cheaper than a movie ticket and watch it with extras as many times as I want with others.

Seems sensible to me, I don't particularly find the big screen experience as thrilling as a lot of people seem to.

I love cinema, I love seeing the movies on the big screen, therefore I'm a bit limited when it comes to waiting for the hype to die down. I never, however, see the movie on the opening week, I usually wait a few weeks before seeing it (something I paid for a few times - there are a few films I didn't see because I waited too long and they were taken off-screen).

When someone tries to pressure me into seeing something it usually has a totally opposite effects. The list of movies that I "must see!!" is probably a mile long (Batman Begins for starters). I think a lot of it is contributed by the fact that if everyone treat something as a second coming, you expect to see a second coming and are afraid to be disappointed if the title is only "great". I have seen TDK already and it was exactly the case. Not because the movie was bad, no, it was very, very good but I hardly had to change my underwear while watching and, since 90% of people think that they should dig up Heath already and just give him his bloody Oscar, I was also disappointed by his Joker.

Pretty much my concern as well. The movie's so hyped, NOTHING can live up to it. I will only be disappointed while that's still rumbling around.
