Spain Take 2
Jul. 12th, 2007 11:57 am
I had a good time while I was away in Spain, although it already seems like a long time ago and I've only been back for a day. As vacations go, this one was pretty relaxed - when I go away I normally go for holidays that aren't relaxing as such and try and pack in as much as I can in a short space of time. The idea of just lying on a beach all day doing nothing isn't particularly appealing, but that's what I ended up doing a lot of days.
The weather was hot, around 80°F at its coolest and 96°F at its warmest. Plenty hot enough and when it's that warm, there wasn't much option but to head down the beach and alternate between stretching out on the sand and swimming. Cooler up in the mountains, where my folks place is, but it was a short hop in the car down to central Benidorm, so the first day was spent spread out on the beach there. The following day we went up to Calpe and enjoyed another day on the beach before checking out the harbor as the fishing boats were coming in, under the shadow of the rock there. Had a nice meal in the evening by the beach edge.
Another day on the beach, then up to Denia on the train, on what turned out to be one of the hottest days. Too hot to really walk around the town too much and with siesta time falling while we were there, we ended up having lunch by the town hall and then headed back home.
After a rather winswept day on the beach, we headed down to Alicante the following day, in time to see the competitors in the Tall Ships Race which were moored up at the harborside, giving us a chance to go on them all and explore. An interesting and picturesque experience.
After a day on the beach in Bendorm, (including a nice meal, it was up to Guadalest, the Moorish citadel in the mountains, the following day. Hot enough to be pleasant but enough shade to be able to enjoy it, Guadalest has to be one of my favourite spots in the area.
There was time the following days to visit the evening medieval market in La Nucia and more beach time, as well as visiting Albir and Altea. All in all, it was a relaxing break, warmer than my coldblooded nature is comfortable with, but still very pleasant, especially in the long evenings. The location of my folks apartment remains as pleasant as ever, although there's some building work going on in the village, hopefully the limitations of the geography mean they can't overdevelop the site.
Anyway, glad to be back, but I was just as happy to be away. Sadly, bills still need to be paid. Back to it!
