Arsenic and Old Lace

A couple of people have asked how rehersals are going for my next play and "not bad" is the answer. Tonight's rehersal was frustrating, with one fellow actor particularly as he's not learnt a word yet and struggles to read from the book, which makes every speech twice as long as it should be with all ther "er..."s and looong pauses. Frustration too that many of the cast were missing, meaning at one point where I'm supposed to be acting to about five people, the stage was empty apart from me. Tricky. (But I can't blame anyone else - I was away 10 days myself).

However, I've had a number of compliments about my casting and the way I'm playing the role, as well as for being word perfect without the book. I'm not. But the trick is to forge on and get the generally meaning of the words out even if you don't get the words exactly. Then no one notices you've said different words each time. Of course, I try to be a lot more accurate with cue lines, but to be fair to myself I am pretty good with my words, so perhaps the compliments are deserved.

Anyway, people seem to be enjoying what I'm doing. Personally, I think I need to get in a lot more subtlety - I feel like I'm playing it too bombastic at the moment, but hopefully that will come in time.

Got one of my costumes sorted out tonight - all my safari gear - which is a bit of a surprise for all concerned. We thought we were going to struggle with that. Don't wait for pics though - it'll be a couple of weeks probably, until I have some.

But so far, so good.
