Who seems to be hitting its stride again after a disappointingly lacklustre Cybermen two parter that was notable only for Mickey's greatness. After a solid and rather surreal episode last week (The Idiot's Lantern) which was about as British as British could be, with the evil BBC announcer and the Queen's Coronation, it's to the far future for another two parter that shows just what Who can do with a decent alien planet setting.

A grimy, industrial set that stole the best elements of Alien and Event Horizon and a plot that owed a fair bit to the latter, combined with a black hole, body count, and probably the best alien design of the new series (the squid-like Ood) all helped to make this an enjoyable and creepy ride.

Oh, and they did a totally alien planet for pretty much the first time in the new series. And, of course, they filmed it in a quarry.

All alien planets look like quarries.

It's tradition.

Dunno if you played Doom back in the day, but the door sounds they used were cribbed from that. My friends and I all busted up giggling every time. Clever lads.

Yeah, a lot of people have said the same thing. News to me but yeah, deliberate tribute presumably. :)
