A while back I was downloading a few songs that John Peel had regularly played before his tragic death and I figured I'd post a few up here that are my recommendations to those of you with playlists.

Just the few that have stuck in my head. These are the more obscure tracks that are available for free download.

Support new music.

Stephen Malkmus and The Jicks - Do Not Feed The Oyster
Wonderfully weird, but steadily melodic, the lyrics make this one a joy.

People Like Us - Dolly Pardon?
Weird electronic samples of political interviews and Dolly Parton mixed to make a deliciously languid tune. Strangely beautiful.

Trembling Blue Stars - Ghost of an Unkissed Kiss
Pure melodic poppy goodness.

Ash - Burn Baby Burn!
I love this band. They've been a favourite of mine for years - they played their first Glastonbury Festival the same year I attended and are the same age as me. They've had greater success though - this is one of their classic singles. Pure, driving indie rock.

Barcelona - I Have the Password to Your Shell Account
Tokyo pop. Except from the accents I'm guessing from somewhere other than Tokyo. But it's Tokyo pop nevertheless.

The Detachment Kit - Dead Angels Make Slow Sound
Okay, it's a Pixies rip off, but it's a GOOD Pixies rip off.

Laura Cantrell - Churches Off The Interstate
A touch of country about this one, again, it's got a lovely melody and Cantrell's voice is great. A foot tapper.

Calexico - Crystal Frontier (Widescreen Version)
I actually prefer the original of this track, but this remix is still great - a weird combination of Spaghetti Western soundtrack, Salsa, Southern rock, indie, and dusty ambience.

Also, I have to note that "Spread Your Legs, Release the Bats" is the best song title I've ever heard. Shame the actual song stinks.
