I think I've pinpointed, after reading John Roger's article, exactly why Bendis' work from the last year has been so unsatisfying.

Bendis used to be about the only male writer who wrote women well. Alias and Powers had some of the greatest female leads in any comics, almost in any medium.

But let's think about his performance this last year...

Gwen Stacy was sucked dry and killed by a Spideman clone.

Jessica Jones goes from being a strong independent character to being "Luke Cage's girlfriend." Practically every appearance she makes has her referred to as such.

The independent and strong willed Black Widow goes crying to Matt Murdock for protection.

The Scarlet Witch can't have kids, so she goes crazy and kills her friends.

Sue Storm is a token blonde girlfriend.

The Wasp is almost beaten to death.

Deena Pilgrim is badly injured, almost killed, stripped and humiliated by a rogue superhero.

Daredevil only marries his wife because he's had a breakdown, making her a victim of it.

She Hulk also goes crazy and tries to kill her friends.

Jessica Jones is attacked by the Green Goblin and almost loses her baby.

Emma Frost turns up and when her team of mutants are attacked, she goes to pieces.

Typhoid Mary gets the shit kicked out of her by Luke Cage.

Jessica Jones undergoes a year-long mind-rape.

So, in one year, Bendis has gone from being one of the few writers writing three dimensional female characters to someone who doesn't have a single positive moment for women in a whole 12 months.

Bendis' talent really has taken a nosedive this year. Seems like he's been spending too much time with Mark "all women are the same and rape victims" Millar.
