The CINESCAPE website posted a photo of what was a preliminary design for Marvin the depressive android in the upcoming film version of HITCHHIKER’S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY. Devised by the Jim Henson workshop, the design would indicate that the film’s producers are re-imagining the character as a dwarfish android with a cute (some would say cutesy), Japanese-influenced design. Warrick Davis (WILLOW) is attached to the picture, and portraying Marvin and below are the pictures of him actually in the costume.
Douglas Adams, the author of the original HITCHHIKER’S novels, stated on many occasions that he wasn’t entirely sure what Marvin looked like, but that the character was a tall, elegantly designed android who slouched and exuded an air of off-putting misery. The BBC’s TV version of HITCHHIKER’s depicted Marvin as a clunky, boxy robot with clamp hands and a built-in frown; Adams was less than thrilled with aspects of the series, and was particularly disappointed with its depiction of Marvin.
Kinda disappointed with this.
