Well that was scary
Dec. 11th, 2003 07:19 pmThought for a second I was going to have to go car shopping again. driving home from work along the ferry road, the road passes through a village and then onto country roads again. coming out of the village there's a sharp bend. I came round there as another car came in the opposite direction. It misjudged the bend and went up the bank on the side of the road and tipped onto is side just as I was coming alongside. Two miracles here, first that the driver was able to climb out and walk away and second that he didn't hid my car. I don't know quite how close he came but there can't have been much in it.
Frightening experience. Once I was clear of the bend to avoid anyone crashing into me once I'd stopped I jumped out and ran back to see if the ambulance was needed. All the traffic behind me had obviously stopped, and the oncoming traffic too. Bit of a snarl up, but it did mean plenty of people stopped to help the driver. He was just climbing out of the car, one of the people carrier things, when I got there. Someone was already on the phone to the police then and presumably the ambulance, although the guy seemed oka. I know from experience you can be shocked after an accident but pretty calm, and this chap seemed okay. We tried to right the car to clear the road but with just five of us it presented too much of a challenge so we had to just rock it so it was only taking up one side of the road. Doubt it did it ay good, but since it had already smashed onto its side I think it can be pretty much assumed it was a write off already.
Left my details with the driver so if he needs a witness he has one. Feeling guilty because I was driving on full beam as I approached the corner and only dipped them as I saw the other car. Wonder if he was a bit dazzled by my lights.
Thankful no-one was hurt badly at least, which is surprising. Just driver's error at the end of the day, you could follow his tyre prints up the bank to the point where the car simply overbalanced.
Still, scary stuff to have a car roll NEXT TO YOU when you're driving. Still a bit shaken.
