So... Weapon X eh? Just finished rereading it. Good to see that Jono hasn't just slipped into comics limbo like I suspected after Chuck Austen got his greed hands on him (how many characters does that writer need to hog anyway?) and the storyline has potential. I'll cut my specific thoughts to avoid spoilers.
Okay, what did I think of this issue of Weapon X? Well as usual the writing as average, the ideas pretty unsubtle, but actually, for a Chamber appearance, it wasn't too bad. Jono's been a -lot- worse written in his time (particularly by Austen recently, who seemed to be under the impression he was a xenophobic and lacked any of the subtlety the Chamber Icons series had in that regard).
There were a couple of things that bothered me, which might -not- be something to worry about at all. Just depends on whether the situation in this issue with Jono going off the rails was a set up to get weapon X sniffing round him or not. If it -was-, which I certainly hope it is then things make sense. If what you saw in this issue were true emotions then I think there a couple of jarring points.
First is how Jono would lose it so badly over Paige, who, it's already been established, he doesn't think he has a future with anyway. He spent enough time pushing her away and going off to boff pop stars. Seems unlikely he'd lose it over Paige.
The second thing is the behaviour of the X-men in this issue. They behave really badly. Jono smashes up a bar, doesn't really hurt anyone and laysout Warren and the X-men, Wolverine in particular, act like it's the worst thing in the world. Yes, that Wolverine. You know, the one who's attacked his fellow X-men countless times and is a mass murderer. And is still accepted by the X-men. Jono's 'crime' pales so much by comparrison it jarrs. They beat the snot out of him and dump him in jail? Not the behaviour of the X-men I'm familiar with, who'll accept mass murderers into their midst without a blink.
I assume it's a setup though, in which case the behaviour could be just a ploy.
Kudos to Jono for laying Warren out though. After that disgustingly smug, supercilous and insincere 'X-men are family' speech my own fists were itching. I'd have slugged the smirking git too. (Man, and Warren has -such- a smug grin throughout. Bastard. ;)
