Anyway, finally woke up (bang on 1pm). Must have been a wee bit tired.
Had a very nice time last night. Expensive, but all in good fun. Good company, lots of wine and good food (surprisingly. Last year's sucked).
Less of a result for my company this year. We were nominated for a few awards - someone from my last show was up for Best Supporting Actor, the show's producer was up for Best Director of a Comedy, the lighting was up for Best Light and Sound. None of which anyone won, which was disappointing, but not surprising. Given that it's a farce based on a TV show, the reviewer who has the final say on winners made it very clear that she didn't consider the show 'real theatre' in her review. I was surprised we got ANY nominations, but I guess the public vote couldn't be entirely ignored.
The director made it clear she was pissed off that our set design was not nominated, since so many people had voted for it, but I was just glad on how many compliments I had on it, and how many people who saw the play said it was "professional level". Very nice to get that.
My dad's musical society, also from the same town, did a bit better. Both groups go together and always support each other, so it was nice to see that the Swanage contingent didn't miss out - it tends to go like that. Last year, we did very well and they didn't, this year vice versa. I think they feel they can only give so many awards to people from the same town or something.
Anyway, a young lad who's a member of both groups won an award for Best Supporting Actor for Ali Hakim in Oklahoma, and the director also won Best Director of a Musical, after many years being nominated. Good to see that. Both nice and very talented people who deserved the recognition.
So, a nice meal before the awards, and a good laugh had by everyone. The awards were interspersed with caberet exerts from some of the shows up for awards - there was a good version of Hey Big Spender, a cringing exert from Annie, well done, but I HATE the show, and some really fantastic songs from Hairspray which got a standing ovation. That group won best musical and thoroughly deserved too.
After the awards there was a disco, and yes, for a change, I did get up and dance since it was that kind of evening. There was a point where they played "Dancing Queen" and I thought to myself "Aye, there's plenty of those tonight". The theatre being what it is. Things finally wrapped up about half one with a rousing high-kicking circle to New York, New York, which has apparently become the traditional closer.
Anyway, had a really nice time and even got to wear my tuxedo, which has been in mothballs since last year.
