Nov. 5th, 2003 09:58 amFinished reading my new comics yesterday, rather belatedly. Pretty disappointing on the whole. Well, maybe not disappointing as such as I didn't expect much to start with, but a quiet week at least.
Not read the Excalibur issues yet. Gonna work through them in order...
Transformers More than Meets the Eye was just profiles of all the characters, an extended version of the tech specs you used to get on the packs. Mind you, they're covering -all- of the G1 characters, which is a hell of a lot of detail to go into. Even the Micromaster teams as individual members. Kudos for completeness. Not exactly a 'readable' comic, just good reference.
Venom was fairly non-descript. Like the art/colouring, which has been good since the very first issue, but the story has so far to grab me. Wolverine appeared this issue (Wait, isn't he about to fall into the sun? No, cos that would involve some sense of CONTINUITY. Sheesh.), but his appearance has basically boiled down to slugfest so far, so nothing spectacular. The nice art's the main reason I keep buying it.
Catwoman was also average - the 'surprise' ending wasn't much of a surprise, the ancient religious cult bad guys were about as original as... well, an ancient killer cult in a DC book, and the hawkman appearance did nothing for me cos I don't have a clue who he is. Besides some bloke with a big nose. But, still better than a lot of the comics I put myself through, so not really complaining.
Speaking of awful comics... New Mutants was -so- bad this month. Starting with the cover - a nice pic of Rahne. Yay, Wolfsbane appearan... no, wait, she's not in the frickin' issue! Jesus Marvel, the pin up covers is one thing, but pin up covers of characters who don't even FRIGGIN' APPEAR is just taking the piss. Inside the art has deteriorated rapidly - I didn't mind the first few issues but apparently there's a new inker who's taken an already fairly muddled art style and made it unbearable. But my main complain was the story, which was so unbelievably trite I was reaching for the vom bag. Bad enough that every part of the script was cliched and unoriginal, no, it also had to be vomit inducingly sentimental too. No subtlety at all.
And didn't Magneto destroy the mansion? Why's everyone still hanging out there?
I still fail to see the point of X-treme X-men. Obviously Chris Claremont thinks there is one, and that the teams are kept seperate for a reason - he keeps harping n about how different X-treme is from the other teams because they're fighting for...er...wait, aren't they fighting for the same thing? A below average issue, which is a fair compliment for Claremont, who makes average an achievement. Just retire already. Kitty's the one character he writes decently and she's vanished again. Gambit's back (ugh) snogging Storm and being generally, well, crap. Probably doesn't help my enjoyment of this book that I only really like one character in the book, Storm, and she's been just plain weird since Claremont started X-treme. What exactly is her problem nowadays?
Oh, and then there's the art. I just -can't- understand how anyone with eyes in their head can critise Frank Quitely's art so vehemently and then not comment on Igor Kordley's stuff. It's pretty awful. On a secondary Marvel book it'd be bad, but on their best sellers it's inexcusable.
X-Statix had its moments, but basically, again, it's only really any good if you ignore what's been written and remember what -was- written. The Di Another Day storyline certainly would have been topical if they'd had the balls to release it, and certainly no more a fantasy than what her former butler is touting around as 'revelations' at the moment. Instead we get an insipid half story, with satirical barbs about media manipulation, landmines, aids victims and so on, that in Diana's case would have made sense, but in the case of the new character created to fill her role in the story, well, doesn't.
Marvel Previews contains about the only good news of the month. january's previes look pretty good - Silvestri on New X-men, where the art looks great. Be nice if they could keep him on a certain book. The future version of Beak certainly looks interesting. Weapon X, with Marrow getting uglified again, and reforming Gene Nation is certainly worth a look. Another Guthrie appearing in Uncanny is probably less of a cause for celebration, but it shows a sense of humour at least. Not sure as to the hints to future storylines though, but I guess we'll see how it pans out.
Nice group shot by Salvador wotsisface for the cover though. Weird looking Juggy though.
Oh, feeling generally better today after some sleep and a day off yesterday, and the nice comments I've had on my manips. Keep posting them and boost my ego some more. ;)
