Okay, deadline week is finally over and so far no phone calls from the printers telling me I ballsed up anywhere which is probably a good thing. Quite a worry I might have after I accidentally tossed away the wrong CD yesterday and almost ended up sending a blank CD to the printers instead of the one with all the work on. That would have been a pretty major f*** up.

It's... erf... 4.20 now and I havn't yet got up. Got in about 6 last night and slept til about 8.30. Thn went back to bed at midnight and slpt through til ten. Then back to bed at 12ish and awake again at three. so... what's that? 15 and a half hours sleep in less than 24 hours? Kinda get the impression deadline week takes it out of me don't you? Worse than ever this time with the 48 pages instead of 36, Minister's visit and all round distractions and hold ups that made the task a nightmare.

Anyway, at least I got away in time to pick up the last 2 weeks worth of comics. not much of a comfort maybe but it's nice to have a little escapism like that to look forward to. Just a little thing, but it's made a different to my drained mood.

Not read that many but had a couple of minor thoughts. I'll cut them to avoid spoilers.

Hey, guess what? [livejournal.com profile] newnumber6 was right. Just to be completely peverse I did really like this week's New X-men. The apocalyptic scale of Magneto's return and immediate revenge was the sort of spectacle I like to read. Okay, not every issue, but Morrison found plenty of time in there for characteristion as well as spectacle. Nice to see an issue without X-men, although it decides finally, once and for all, that the X-men books have utterly given up with even trying to keep any continuity between them. Magneto is able to destory the mansion and take over New York without a peek from any other X characters. And over in all the other X books life continues as normal, with life at the institute unchanged. a shame really, because at least some of the ideas seem to have been considered between books. Xorn was never used to do anything that would require any actual concrete use of his power in the other books making it easier to suggest he was Magneto all along.

As usual though, it's Wolverine that screws up any continuity. You could explain that Magneto was able to trash the Institute if the other X-men were still trapped in that other dimension in Uncanny. Except Wolverine is with them, but also trapped in space with Jean and hunting down a cult in his own comic and god knows where else. oh yeah, teaching self defence in New Mutants. Can't help but think most of these continuity problems could have easily been solved with some decent editing, any kind of editing on the X books seems to have been non existant recently. Quesada did a good job bringing in the creative teams he did to revitalise the X-men titles but since then things have just fallen apart.

Anyway, that's an issue aside from thecomic itself which had some great moments. the idea that Magneto's powers are still needing an extra boost, which has been a factor in all Magneto stories since he tried to tip the world on its axis and battled Joseph, at least was not forgotten. Esme's turning into an entertainingly bitchy character whse hero worship of Magneto smacks of some disturbing sugar daddy type senario which is quite amusing. (As pointed out by the ever perceptive Basilisk - "You have an obsession with an old Xornvestite. You should have your own special website.")

Other characters got the chance to shine too - Beak's confusion and distress at the turn of events, Ernst's constant asking of when Xorn was returning, ("But Mister Xorn was nice... I miss Mister Xorn...") and most of all the return of Toad who seemed to have some of the best lines of all. Although his haircut isn't up to much these days. But the evolution of his new look and new found confidence, his position as Magneto's confidant rather than just his suck up, and his disapproval of Magneto's 'new' Brotherhood all helped to make his reappearance enjoyable. But most of all his motivating speech to the army of mutants crying for Magneto's presence.

"We...will...we will replace the old ways with... new ways... shiny new ways!"

Gotta love him. :)

And it seems that Magneto's softer side has vanished once and for all. The talk of delivering the mercy stroke to the human race was... chilling.

New Mutants, on the other hand, was good old fashioned X-men entertainment. So old fashioned, in fact, that everything in it seems to smack of the previous mutants in training titles. In new Mutants we have a gothic outsider and a studious blonde with a crush on him (Jono and Paige anyone?), the unknown mutant joining Donald Pierce's army (Cannonball?), the bubbly mischevious girl who wants to be friends with everyone (Jubilee?). The serious and bland token black character who's power is to mimic the abilities of others. At least the writer seemed to realise that the comparrisson between David and Synch would be immediately apparent and tried to mock it with Xian's sibling's questioning early in the issue.

All in all there's nothing original here at all, butwhat there is is well done. I happen to like both the art and the writing, with the writer trying to recapture the feel of early New Mutants and Gen X and give it his own voice. so far he hasn't managd to impose his own take on things but hopefully that will come with time.

Only one thing... how long has Xian ben a lesbian? I obviously missed out entirely on that. Oh well, nice to see another gay character in an X-men book that's not aimed at the adult market. The illusion to her and Kitty's 'not quite' moment in the Mekanix mini-series was nice in the last issue. this series has its moments and hopefully can build into a comic that's great and not just pretty good.

Looking forward to NYX next week...
