Series opener for Doctor Who tonight and it managed to be the worst of the new series, even beating out the lamentable kid's scribble monster. Stilted dialogue that thought it was far cleverer than it was, wooden acting, a dreadfully childish central premise and monsters that they presumably thought were satirical and weak attempts to give Donna depth in amidst the lame humour. It's tripped on its first step out of the gate. But, I guess, from here the only way is up.
Bernard Cribbins was the best thing in it but even he was overwhelmed by the cheese.
No wonder the show was moved to an earlier time slot - this was an episode clearly aimed at those who find the Sarah Jane Adventures too mature. My five year old nephew would have loved it. I found it a chore to sit through. How disappointing.
What a difference between this and Torchwood, which wrapped up yesterday. Torchwood had a lame first series but a couple of merely average episodes aside, it's been a brilliant, witty, gripping show throughout. Doctor Who's now looking like the poorer relation.
